Celebrities are not shy when it comes to raising awareness about climate change and environmental challenges. Whether they are Hollywood stars, business tycoons or politicians, everyone seems to be trying to do their bit to attract more and more world leaders’ attention toward climate action. Having a lot of fan following over social media such as Twitter, Instagram or Facebook, it is much easier for them to use their power and influence to connect with their followers and urge them to make a difference for our planet’s ongoing environmental issues. Here are six celebrities who have been doing some notable work for our environment:
This renowned actor comes to the forefront when we talk about the role of celebrities in environmental awareness. The Leonardo DiCaprio foundation– created in 1998 to secure a sustainable future of our planet– makes grant, campaigns and work on media projects on environmental and humanitarian issues. It supports innovative projects to protect endangered wildlife and to restore an ecosystem balance. He has even produced a documentary film, The 11th Hour, which highlighted the mess our planet is into.
An American actress and former fashion model, Jane has been a climate action advocate for many years but of late her “Fire Drill Fridays” has brought her in limelight. An opponent of oil developments and their negative impact on the environment, she has been arrested over four times now for being a part of the climate change protest rallies in the United States of America.
This Hollywood actor has founded Water Defence, an organisation which supports clean water in the world. Also an anti-fracking activist, his main focus is on the oil and gas industry and its adverse impact on the environment. He is also a co-founder of The Solutions Project which is working toward making 100 per cent cleaner energy a reality for everyone.
An English musician and actor, Gordon Matthew Sumner CBE, also known as Sting has been a supporter of earth’s rainforests. Along with his spouse, Trudie Styler, he established The Rainforest Foundation Fund which aims at protecting rainforests and also defends the rights and ancestral lands of the indigenous people living there. It is dedicated to both human rights and environmental protection.
Dr Jane Goodall
A renowned English anthropologist and primatologist, she has been an environmental activist for long. She is probably the world’s most popular conservationist of chimpanzees and their habitat in Gombe, Tanzania. Roots & Shoots, a youth program, founded by Dr Goodall, hopes to motivate everyone–from a pre-schooler to a university student–to work on environmental, conservation and humanitarian issues.
An American politician and also a former Vice President of the country, Al Gore has been a staunch environmental activist to solve the global climate crisis. In 2005, he founded an organisation called Climate Reality Project to advocate and educate climate change issues to people all around the world. He has also won an Academy Award for his documentary on environmental issues, An Inconvenient Truth.
With climate change becoming a global issue, these celebs have enough power and resources at their disposal to educate others to join the fight against environmental issues and urge them to take climate actions.
